Installation

  1. Download the latest copy of memoQ translator pro from the memoQ website
  2. Install memoQ translator pro. Detailed instructions are available in the memoQ installation and activation guide

Info
titlememoQ editions

This installation of memoQ will give you a trial license of memoQ translator pro which you can use with full functionality for 45 days.

After that period your installation becomes a memoQ4free edition. You can continue using this edition of memoQ when you work for translation agencies like PRODOC who have their own memoQ server and can hand out temporary CAL licenses to you.

However, you cannot create your own projects with the 4free edition

Setting up memoQ

We recommend the following MemoQ settings:

Basic setup

Click on the Options button to adjust your local settings:

Appearance

Make sure to Show non-printing characters in order to see the different types of spaces/hyphens and extra spaces at the end of segments:

In the following window you might change the order of appearance of the various types of hits in the Translation results window of the memoQ editor and adjust the displayed font sizes to your liking:

For the next tab Compare boxes we recommend to set different colors for insertion and deletion in the Track changes view:

For the next tab Tracked changes we recommend to leave the default settings unchanged

Spelling and grammar

Enabling Check spelling as you type will underline incorrectly spelled words in red.

memoQ will look up the correct spelling in dictionaries that you specify for your language and in project-specific ignore lists.

Advanced lookup settings

Perform LSC lookup gives you concordance hits (orange) in the Translation results pane.

We recommend the following settings:

Got to the Fragment assembly settings tab and make the following adjustments.

These settings control how the purple hits in the Translation results pane are composed.

We recommend the following settings:

Keyboard shortcuts

We have designed our own set of shortcuts and the instructions given in this Wiki sometimes refer to these shortcuts.

You can download this set of shortcuts by clicking on the following link:

Prodoc's Shortcuts.mqres

You can then add this set of shortcuts to your installation by clicking on Import new:

Privacy settings

The next two options will send your translations/queries to public servers, so better turn them off if you have NDAs with your business partners.
When working for PRODOC, the use of these plugins will be deactivated anyway in the project settings.

External Preview Tools

For translation of subtitles we require the installation of the memoQ video preview tool

You can download the tool from the Kilgray website here

Miscellaneous

We find the following settings useful.

Settings regarding the translation grid

Import/export settings are only important if you create your own projects with memoQ

Lookup results settings influence the way the results are presented to you

The following setting is efficient for project managers working with a large number of languages

These are the weighted counts settings we use for our calculation:

Setup of translation features

titleOpen file required

In order to get access to these settings, you first have to open an arbitrary file

GoToNext settings

The GoToNext settings define where the cursor jumps when you press CTRL+G and after confirming segments with CTRL+ENTER

Call up the GoToNext settings with CTRL+SHIFT+G or using the following menu command:

GoToNext settings for translation

Use the following settings for translation work. CTRL+G will always bring you to the next segment you have to edit and confirm:

GoToNext settings for review of your own translation

After your translation and having confirmed all segments, you can proof-read your own translations by unchecking all checkmarks on the Status tab shown above.

Then click on Get User names in the Conflicts and changes tab, select your user name from the Translator drop down menu and check this item:

This will let you skip all segments that have not been translated by yourself

Translation settings

You can find the Translation settings in the Translation menu:

AutoCorrect

Keep the default settings or add your own settings:

Auto-Propagation

In general, you should Allow auto-propagation and activate Propagate backward and forward - this is not a default setting.

Note

Especially when translating from German, there are some words that can be translated as singular term or as plural term, depending on the context.
Be careful with Auto-propagation when multiple translations of the same segment are possible and required - turn it off in these cases!

Automatic Lookup And Insertion

We find the following settings helpful. This will automatically insert matches where you just have to check Tags, Numbers and Formatting

Predictive Typing And AutoPick

On the first tab you can leave the default settings, but on the second tab make sure to activate Always show AutoPick markers in source text (not activated by default). This helps you to identify which parts of the source text will be presented by AutoPick

Activate the view pane

How to use the view pane

When you work in the translation grid, you have a view pane below which enables you:

    • to show the real-time HTML preview of your documents,
    • to show the Review indicating the inserted match, the QA errors and warnings as well as the LQA errors,
    • to show the Active comments.

You can activate the view pane under View → ViewPane

You can switch between the views with F10.

Info
titleIssues regarding the view pane
    • sometimes the view will not switch right away between the three options (HTML Preview - Review - Active comments)
    • for certain file formats (e.g. .idml, .mif, .pptx) memoQ is unable to generate a preview of the documents

Using CAL licenses

Info
titleWhen do I need to claim CAL licenses

As long as you have a memoQ translator pro edition, you do not need to claim CAL licenses in order for your memoQ copy to work.

See the memoQ CAL UserGuide for information on how to use CAL licenses with your memoQ4free edition
